Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout – Double Barrel Aged
Hunahpu’s Double Barrel Aged Imperial Stout – Cigar City Brewing, Tampa FL. This is an incredibly complex beer made with cacao nibs, chiles, spices, and vanilla beans aged 50% in rum barrels and 50% in apple brandy barrels before being blended together.
Appearance
Pours as dark as the dead of night, like a night when you can’t even see your hand an inch in front of your face. Quickly dissipating head.
Aroma
Smells of rich chocolate and dark fruit from the brandy barrels. Slight vanilla and clove. Spices, molasses, and raisin like notes could be drawn from the rum barrels. Incredibly aromatic and boozy on the nose.
Taste
So much happening here! As this beer warmed more subtle flavors and nuances came to life. Chocolate, dark fruit, and vanilla notes follow suit on taste. Slight warming from the 11.5% ABV. As the beer warmed I picked up notes of raisin and figs with a slight finishing spice from the chilis. Almost too complex to pin down. World Class.
Mouthfeel
Very full bodied beer. Thick and warming yet smooth and adequate carbonation.
Overall
Incredibly unfortunate that this beer is retired and no longer brewed. Incredibly fortunate however that I was able to obtain and enjoy this beer with a good friend. Thank you Darrin @newbeeraday. “Friends bring happiness into you life. Best friends bring beer.”
